Lake Manyara is a great place to start a safari with a gentle introduction. Lake Manyara’s picturesque splendor is the main reason to travel here, and it is well worth a visit. However, when compared to the quality of game viewing available in Tarangire, the Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti, the wildlife viewing here pales into insignificance. The fact that it is known for its tree-climbing lions, flamingos, stunning scenery, and the soda-ash lake in the center makes it worth a day trip.
It’s a shame you missed it as you were driving straight through Manyara…
We have reservations about its quality as a big game watching park, but who cares when you’re ready to embark on a safari to the Ngorongoro and Serengeti?
On the way from Arusha to the Ngorongoro Crater, there’s a magnificent scenic park called Lake Manyara. The lake itself takes up a large portion of the park, leaving a strip of land along its banks where game gathers. Manyara is frequently visited for an afternoon game drive on the route to Ngorongoro, and is known for its tree climbing lions, fine elephants, and baboons.
Overall, it’s a terrific way to start a Tanzania safari, although the park isn’t up to par with its neighbors. Because of the limited volume of game and the small size of the game driving zones, it is not one of our first choices. But it’s a wonderful little park to stop by for lunch before starting your safari.
